Leaf Theory

Ilchi Lee graphically represents his philosophy in a diagram he called the Leaf theory. It lays out the history and current condition of humankind and suggests alternative ways which will lead us down a road to peace.

Our civilization has traveled through the age of faith and the age of reason, growing externally using competition and domination as its main source of energy for growth, to the point where the external expansion and the internal fragmentation of our civilization has brought us to the edge of self-destruction. To make a comparison with the breath, this is like inhaling without stopping, which would lead to burst lungs.

Now it is time to shift from inhaling to exhaling, from holding to releasing, from expanding to converging. For a convergence we need a centripetal axis, that is a central value which integrates all the varied drives and forces of human society into a single direction; PEACE. The centripetal axis or the central value cannot be a religion, or a nation, or an ideology. It cannot be anything less than the Earth itself. Taking the Earth as a central value means re-identifying oneself as an “Earth Citizens” who thinks and acts with the enlightenment of the experiential knowledge that he/she is an individuated integral part of the life of the Earth.

Thus, enlightenment means re-identifying oneself as an Earth-Human; it is a choice. Acting on the choice is healing; healing oneself, one’s society, humanity and the Earth. Earth-Humans are the hope of the Earth.
