Declaration of Humanity

OVERVIEW of HUMANITY CONFERENCE

-Earth Humans in Pursuit of a "New Humanity" and Culture in the 21st Century

OUTLINE

World-renowned scholars, thinkers and social activists gathered together in Seoul, Korea on June 15, 2001 to attend the New Millennium World Peace Humanity Conference. The conference was presented by the New Millennium Peace Foundation (NMPF) which is a non-governmental, independent organization founded by Dr. Ilchi Lee and Neale Donald Walsch in 1997. NMPF invited prestigious academicians, journalists, activists, and experts in the fields of religion, journalism, culture and the environment to make presentations and engage in discussions with an international audience. It was an ambitious attempt at exploring the concrete influence that spirituality can have on our current political, economic and cultural makeup.

CONFERENCE OUTCOME AND SIGNIFICANCE

The conference held great significance in two respects. First, the Declaration of Humanity of June 17, 2001, was adopted unanimously by the panelists and signed by lots of people from different nations. The declaration is a five-point statement of intention for "Earth Humans." An Earth Human is 1) a Spiritual Being, 2) a Child of the Earth, 3) a Healer, 4) a Protector, and 5) an Activist. An Earth Human works actively to save the earth and resolve potentially devastating problems including pollution, threat of war, disease, poverty, and increasing disparity between rich and poor. (See last page of this article to sign the Declaration.)

Second, this conference was especially encouraging to Koreans due to the symbolic value of the Conference being held in Korea, the last remaining divided country in the world. In the opening speech, President Lee noted: "The year of 2001 marks the 51st anniversary of the Korean War which broke out on June 25, 1950. I hope that the first Humanity Conference, which is being held in the world's only remaining ideologically separated nation, will contribute to the unification of our divided peninsula and, ultimately, to sustainable peace throughout the world."

THE 2001 DECLARATION OF HUMANITY

Can you imagine a moment in which 12,000 candles light up in the darkness? The Jang Chung Indoor Stadium in Seoul glowed as 12,000 gems glittered everywhere on June 17th, 2001. The 2001 Declaration of Humanity ceremony was the grand finale of the conference. The candlelight ceremony with 12,000 candles symbolized the world's unity and enlightenment beyond the boundaries of race, religion, nationality gender, and age. Dr. Ilchi Lee, president of the New Millennium Peace Foundation and one of the world's leading philosophers and spiritual leaders, officially proclaimed the Declaration of Humanity.
