and strategy for change: Philosophy, Methodology and Culture
III. Remaining tasks
Since the dawn of history we know our civilization has advanced
only in one direction. Separating you and me, defining that relationship
as a confrontational and competitive one, and strengthening external
power by defeating and dominating the competition is the direction
our civilization has consistently taken. The result of this is the
current portrait of our civilization, which is competitive, self-destructive
and unsustainable.
The civilization we are going to create in the future through a
new worldview, methodology and life culture is a bright and healthy
civilization that sees the Earth as the center of all values. The
New Humans who recognize themselves as Earth Humans and hold the
'Honk-Ik' spirit as their life philosophy will lead the new civilization.

1. The new face of Civilization
1) Materialistic Civilization and Spiritual Civilization
What shall we call such a civilization? For now, it may be described
as a spiritual civilization, although such a term itself is a remaining
vestige of the dualistic way of thinking. However, this particular
term is useful not to emphasize spiritual as opposed to material,
but to make clear the limitations that our civilization has to overcome.
As we emerge into this new society, in all likelihood a new term
will also emerge.
Civilization, in a nutshell, is the sum of all the tools and values
that make our life convenient. Therefore, the nature of civilization
can change depending on how we define our life and ourselves. When
we think of ourselves only as a physical body and a separate entity
and when our value system is built on such self-identification,
our civilization is materialistic regardless of the level of technology.
When a society with an advanced level of technology and an enormous
amount of information and energy caters to, and worships only the
physical body, the convenience of the body, material life and individual
personality, then that society's civilization is inevitably a low
level of materialistic civilization no matter how sophisticated
it is in its outward expression.
In a spiritual civilization, the material is not an end in itself
but is understood as a tool used for internal growth. This new civilization
does not exclude, deny, or give up its pursuit of growth. In this
new civilization, humans still aspire to growth; however, they define
the meaning of growth differently. Here, growth is not an external
growth expressed as possession and dominance, but internal growth
expressed as love and peace. Since growth in this civilization aims
at perfection not at success, problems of competition and distribution
surrounding success do not occur. This is because my perfection
does not reduce the chance for you to reach perfection and sharing
peace with others does not reduce my experience of peace.Top
2) Turnaround: from what to what?
A more detailed picture of the nature of the changes in human civilization
we are going to manifest may be helpful on the road to the actualization
of this future. We will become and move away from:
An unsustainable civilization to a sustainable civilization;
- A civilization focusing on materials as its goal to a civilization
using materials for the purpose of the growth of the soul;
- A civilization expanding the physical power to a civilization
cultivating character and nursing the soul;
- A civilization with competition and success as its objectives
to a civilization with growth and perfection as its objectives;
- A hypocritical civilization where theory and practice contradict
each other to a truthful and sincere civilization where daily life
equates with truth;
- A civilization that sees destructive power as strength to a civilization
that sees healing power as strength;
- A civilization that is centered on ethnic identity, religions,
and ideologies to a civilization that is centered on the Earth;
- A civilization where Americans, Koreans, Chinese, Europeans etc.
live to a civilization where Earth Humans live;
- A civilization where Christians, Buddhists, Muslims, and Jews
etc. worship their own God to a civilization where all Earth Humans
discover divinity within themselves and express it as they choose;
- A childish and parasitic civilization that cannot even properly
dispose of the waste it produces in the process of maintaining its
life to a mature and responsible civilization that restores all
the consequences of its actions as a result of its choice to their
original state;
- A civilization that goes after an illusion of salvation and enlightenment
to a civilization that recognizes enlightenment within itself and
as a social norm practices enlightenment;
- A separated and alienated civilization where neighbors cannot
communicate with each other to a civilization that can carry on
full communication with the entire Earth;
- A civilization dominated by spiritual elitism and mysticism to
a civilization where enlightenment becomes common sense.
The sum of all these is the face of the civilization we are creating
in the name of a Spiritual civilization.Top
2. Suggestion for Change on a Global Level: World Earth Human Alliance
If what we are seeking is to overcome the crisis of our civilization
and accomplish world peace, then this is not something that can
be done by changing one individual or one country. Since the conditions
of our lives are already global, retreating to a cave deep in the
mountains, and just leading a good life cannot free us from the
huge global problems we face.
One leader, one country or one organization cannot achieve a foundational
change in the direction of human civilization and the realization
of world peace. It is only possible through a spiritual alliance
of all Earth Humans who have overcome ethnic, religious and cultural
differences in every corner of the world. I shall call the group
capable of such solidarity and systemizing its activities the World
Earth Human Alliance.
This alliance that started with the declaration of Earth Humans
by twelve thousand at the first Humanity Conference and more worldwide,
will grow into a spiritual solidarity of all Earth Humans. Throughout
the world those who practice their enlightenment, as a choice through
healing their communities, society and the Earth will create a spiritual
solidarity of non-governmental civil activist organizations that
practice 'Love for the Earth and Love for Humanity' beyond political
or national interests. Ultimately this movement will become established
as a spiritual solidarity of ethnic groups and countries when they
all understand and recognize that before and after everything they
are all Earth Humans.
This alliance will share the United Nation's vision for the realization
of World Peace and support the U.N.'s activities in a non-political
realm, through cultural activities. This does not mean merely creating
another new organization. For turning the direction of the human
civilization and realizing World Peace is not a task that can be
accomplished by creating a new organization, appointing representatives
and staff and establishing rules and institutions. Unless people
are changed in a fundamental way, nothing will happen. Their life
purposes have to be changed, as well as their character and habits.
Thus, what the Alliance of Earth Humans represents is the birth
of a new civilization that chooses a new world-view as Earth Humans
and shares and exemplifies new characters and habits that correspond
to the new world-view.
With only 1% of the entire world population joining in this spiritual
alliance and living in this advanced global civilization in every
part of the world, it is possible for the Earth's civilization to
change along with its destiny. The Alliance of Earth Humans, a voluntary
alliance of one billion New Humans who represent the new civilization
and lead the shift of global civilization, this is the face of the
Earth that I envision by the year 2010.
Now is the time to change direction, from inhaling to exhaling
and from expansion to convergence. While in the expansion process,
the center was individuals and the driving forces were competition
and dominance. In the convergence process, the center is the Earth
and the driving forces are integration and harmony. To show such
possibilities and to instill everyone with hope for the future is
the task and the responsibility of the one billion Earth Humans.
Now is the time to choose and if we don't choose, nobody will. It
is important to emphasize that this is not a choice you can hand
over to someone else. The beginning of the new civilization on the
Earth starts with each one of us.
